Lamar County was founded in November 1920 by an amendment to the state constitution. It is named after Lucious Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, who served multiple terms as a Unites States Congressman, became a U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Interior under President Grover Cleveland and associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The county seat Barnesville, was well known as the “Buggy Capital of the South” in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Now the annual Buggy Days festival has grown to be amongst the largest festivals in Georgia. Held annually in September the festival attracts more than 50,000 people and features arts and crafts and parade displaying some of the very buggy’s made in Barnesville.
In 1872 Gordon Institute was founded by a confederate solder and soon became Gordon Military College. It trained men who fought during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. Gordon College joined the University system in 1972 and now known as Gordon State College.
